A Brief History
School Building Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata, was founded in 1952 by Mrs. Rukmani Devi Birla. Its first Principal was Mrs. Violet Clarke. Widely perceived as a school which has combined tradition and modernity, Indian and other cultures in a successful mix, the school does not favour any particular sect or religion and has always embraced different communities without bias. The declared twin mission of the school is committment to continuous self-development and service to society.


MHS has an established reputation for academic execellence and for providing its students a stimulating learning environment. Its curriculum is dynamic with ommunication skills, environmental projects, community service, health and value education, art and aesthetics seamlessly built into the school programme. The school places priority on the learning-teaching process and the focus is on enquiry and creativity, rather than passive learning and aggressive competition. Thus pursuit of academic intelligence and development of diverse talents form integral aspects of school life.

MHS respects the uniqueness of every individual and boasts of a system that recognizes personal attributes such as integrity and diligence in addition to achievement.

In its short but rich history, the school has produced a number of outstanding alumnae who have done their alma mater proud. They are contimuing to do so in different corners of the globe.
